Illegal Street Racing – Vehicular Manslaughter

The Independent Tiger Weekly at LSU – The Fast and the Fatal: Illegal street racing in LA

Roger*, a mechanical engineering senior, had a friend who was racing on a two-lane road in Slidell early this past summer when he accidentally knocked his competitor off the street having momentarily lost control of his vehicle. The other racer was sent soaring off the road straight into a tree and died instantly. Unlike the California incident that occurred early this fall, the driver responsible for the accident called 911 and waited at the scene for help to arrive. He was arrested and is being charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Every now and then there is a story about a racer or, even worse, an innocent bystander getting killed in an illegal street racing related accident. Some people just like the adrenaline rush that the racing gives them, but they still need the protective shell of the car body around them to give them a false sense of safety and a little pedal to push with their right foot to increase their sense of manhood.

The Fast and the Furious and a bunch of other movies give the role models for the young and the speed hungry all over the world. Kimble with his elite Gumball 3000 rally is one of the biggest (and also most disliked) players in the real world versions of high profile illegal races.

Gumball 3000 – the movie

150 supercars, 3000 miles, 14 arrests and $50,000 in fines – Win the DVD!

GUMBALL 3000 is a must for everyone who loves cars, women, parties and breaking every rule in the book!

Quite simply the coolest car movie of its time – GUMBALL 3000 should come with a health warning, because all you’ll want to do after watching it is get behind the wheel of your own car.. and gun it! “
