Yep, I sort of figured while I wrote my original post that the car isn't probably on the top of the list in terms of what to have when you lodge in Suokki. The public transportation is pretty groovy in the mainland the minute you step out of the ferry, so why take a car?

Yes, I know what you mean. Living in the center of Helsinki isn't much different in the summer though... except we have no backyards :)

I have developed a blind spot for most tourists and pay about as much attention to them as to pigeons.

The residents do get season passes for some of the ferries for about 50 euros and you don't really need a car once you move over there. A friend of mine who lives in Suomenlinna sometimes spends a week or two without even taking the ferry back to the continent. The aesthetics of the environment and the good community spirit can't be found in any other place that near to the center of Helsinki.

We were there on saturday and sort of felt sorry for the people living there. During summer, the island is absolutely packed with people and the only store there has huge queues. The residents on the island get no special passes to transport their cars via the ferry and generally have to put up with tourists in their backyards. Still, I wouldn't mind living there for a summer :-)
